Do you ever wonder how Paul creates those awesome backlit features on Custom Built? An illuminated onyx backsplash, a glowing bar, or a picture brought to life with light–just a few of the applications Paul has used TechniLite lighting systems for.
TechniLite is a lighting manufacturer founded in Canada and produced in North America. They specialize in T5 and LED lighting systems. With over twenty years in the business, they have both experience and a great reputation for keeping up with the latest trends. TechniLite engineers cutting edge products and provides an impressive selection of top-of-the-line display lighting systems, outdoor signs, back-lit and edge-lit signs and panels. While these can be used commercially, we have found many uses for their lighting systems within our residential builds.
The super thin panels made by TechniLite can bring opaque or clear surfaces to life and add a unique lighting element to your designs. They customize their products to fit your specific application, giving you the perfect size, brightness, and installation requirements for every project. By manufacturing their own materials in North America, TechniLite can offer dependable, affordable, high-quality products with optimal turnaround time–giving you exactly what you need, when you need it.

Metal sculptures and artwork can be used in all sorts of styles, from contemporary to rustic designs to add intrigue and texture to your space. If you are looking for something outside of the generic options found in retail stores, Paul has loved working with, and commissioning pieces from Geordie Lishman.
Geordie Lishman is a metal sculptor, painter and teacher, based out of Ajax, Ontario. His work can be found all over Canada, in many different forms. He has been commissioned to construct pieces as small as a table-top ornament, and as large as a life-sized ‘Transformer’ constructed of full-sized cars. Not only is his work amazing, Lishman’s dedication to sustainability and the preservation of the environment inspires him to use almost exclusively recycled materials–most of his metal comes from scrapyards.
Paul has featured Geordie Lishman’s metal work in several of his jobs, both as accents and as the focal point of the design. Geordie Lishman has created one-of-a-kind privacy screens, fire grates and artwork for our projects, to name a few, and he never ceases to amaze us with his work. When choosing your finishes, there is simply nothing better than working with an artist to design and create something that is unique to your space and your style. Check out some of Geordie Lishman’s work on his website. If you would like a closer look, contact Lishman for the dates of his next art show.

Walls are the backdrop and foundation of any interior design, but sometimes even when using the right colours the room can be left feeling flat. Paul has found that the decorative panels from WALLdesign add dimension and texture to help bring those walls to life.
WALLdesign, also known as MURdesign, is a Canadian company based out of Québec that is changing the way we look at wall paneling. WALLdesign panels are textured panels that are installed over the drywall to add contemporary, rustic or classic character to your space. This eco-friendly company uses 100% recycled wood and non-VOC paint for their primed or specialty finished panels.
Offering a wide variety of styles and textures in both full and half-wall panels, WALLdesign has made it easy to find just the right finish to enhance your design. The easy to install panels give the instant look of concrete, barn board, tile, stone, layered wood, wainscoting or even a contemporary waved surface. What better way to bring your modern country space to another level, than with a rustic wood-plank feature wall? The 468 planking collection by WALLdesign comes in three colours and sizes to complement your design.
Whether you are looking for the classic feel of a unique full or half-wall wainscoting, or the edgy modern vibe of a concrete feature wall, WALLdesign has the perfect panels to complete your space. Exposed beams make a dramatic statement, taking an ordinary room and making it grand. Unfortunately, a lot of homes don’t have beams to expose, and installing them can be difficult and costly, but thankfully that isn’t your only option. A great company that Paul is thrilled to work with is The Hollow Timber Co.
To reproduce the look and feel of authentic timber framing, Hollow Timber Co. has created hollow beams that are made of real high-quality white pine but are lightweight and don’t require any structural alterations. The beams are fitted using an advanced system that creates invisible seams, so final product looks like real solid beams. Hollow Timber Co. is a Canadian company that designs, crafts, finishes and installs their hollow timber systems in-house. This allows them to offer a variety of product choices to achieve truly unique designs for every client. With customizable colours and finishes, you can get the perfect beams to coordinate with any design.
The Hollow Timber Co.’s unique hollow design also opens up many possibilities for lighting and electrical. When using the box beam system you can run pot lights, pendants, strip lights or even chandeliers with ease. Their designs are semi-structural and work with all conventional construction methods including: new builds, renovations or within fully finished spaces. Hollow Timber Co. can install the beams for you, or you can have them installed by your contractor or even do it yourself, the choice is up to you.
Suiting both modern and traditional designs, Hollow Timber Co. will add a new dimension to your tired and boring white ceiling. Check out their gallery for inspiration before your next reno. After a long day nothing soothes the body and mind like the sound of a crackling fire, or the cascade of water as it falls. Unfortunately, both can be hard to come by at home, especially in the cold winter months. Which is why Paul likes to utilize the amazing water and fire features available from The Soothing Company in his designs.
Operating out of Camas, Washington, The Soothing Company has everything you need to create a relaxing environment both outside and inside of your home. They carry a large line of fountains, fireplaces, bean bag chairs, hammocks, outdoor art, and many other fine home and garden decor items.
Want to bring the ambience of water to your outdoor oasis? The Soothing Company has a great selection of outdoor water features, water walls, fountains and various other types available to choose from. But why stop there? While water walls are usually only associated with the outdoors, it doesn’t have to be that way with The Soothing Company’s vast range of beautifully crafted indoor waterfalls and water features. A unique and stunning option for an indoor water feature carried by The Soothing Company are the Art Wall Fountains. An Art Wall Fountain is a beautiful hand-painted masterpiece that provides a colorful landscape for a waterfall to flow down.
The Soothing Company also has a huge selection of indoor and outdoor fire features to add to the atmosphere of your room or outdoor space, and that is really only the tip of the iceberg of what they have to offer. The Soothing Company has every base covered when it comes to creating a relaxing and inviting space to call your own.
To bring that essential element of calm to your next reno or update, drop by The Soothing Company and be amazed at how relaxing life could be. Natural stone can bring elegance and flair to any space, but it isn’t always the easiest material to work with. That’s why Paul was thrilled to find DesignerStone® Panels. Their lightweight stone panels are a great alternative to traditional stone slabs.
DesignerStone® Panels are made up of a front layer of thinly cut real stone (granite, travertine, onyx or marble) adhered to an unique backing which is then engineered using the most modern patented technology to create an extremely strong and light weight stone faced structure. The result is a natural stone panel that is stronger and much lighter than traditional large slabs of the same stone, making them much easier to transport and install.
One of Paul’s favourite features of DesignerStone® Panels is their ability to be back-lit. Why not flip a switch and take an already beautiful onyx backsplash and bring it to life with light? When using the translucent or opaque panels you are able to incorporate lighting into your feature wall, bar-top, backsplash, outdoor screen, tub enclosure, or any other element you want to highlight – the applications are endless.
Want to upgrade your shower or bath enclosure without the mess or hassle of installing marble tiles? DesignerStone® Panels are waterproof, groutless, and can be installed over existing tiles. No CNC machine or bridge saw required–in most cases panels can be cut onsite with portable tools, and by using full panels (vs tiling) you can really show off the beauty of the natural stone.
Paul Lafrance Design has incorporated DesignerStone® Panels into many bathrooms, kitchens, bars, and outdoor spaces and are always looking for new ways to use this innovative product. Check out DesignerStone® Panels before your next reno, and don’t forget that we’re always looking for cool new products to try, so get in touch and give us the scoop on your company.
As a radical and outside-the-box kind of guy, Paul is always on the lookout for unique design solutions for his projects. When we spotted the Hidden Vision TV Mounts, he couldn’t resist! These mounts are like nothing we’d ever seen before. They don’t just conceal the television, they make it disappear effortlessly and without a trace, turning it into a painting, decorative mirror, or hidden panel.
The idea is simple. It’s great to relax and let go of the day with your favourite television show (we recommend checking out Custom Built!), but when it’s not in use, that blank empty screen is pretty uninspiring. Plus, it takes up room that, if you’re like us, you’ve been yearning to fill with beautiful art and photography. For the person who never has enough space in their home for art, a Hidden Vision TV Mount is a must-have!
How does it work? The Hidden Vision TV Mount hinges with specially designed counter balancing linkage technology that neutralizes the weight of the TV. This makes the mount extremely easy to operate manually, so that it unfolds at just a touch. For even more convenience, motorized mounts can be created too! For additional versatility, there are three styles of mount, including a flip-around wall mount and two varieties of extending mounts for the TV-lover who enjoys watching from the comfort of their bed. From an installation point of view, Paul & the team finds these units to be easy to install, requiring no special modifications to the wall. Plus, their strength leaves you confident that your expensive television is safe & secure!
With such ingenious craftsmanship, we at Paul Lafrance Design just had to incorporate this cool & innovative product! Consider a Hidden Vision TV Mount for your next remodeling project, we think it’s well worth the investment. Join us next week for another ‘We <3 It!’ Wednesday!
Have we got a sizzler for you today! If you love to entertain, this one’s right up your alley. Firetainment tables combine the inviting warmth of a fire feature with an outdoor cooking zone. When Paul first saw one, he was blown away. It was a match made in deck design Heaven!
How does it work? Easy – the specially designed burner assembly creates an even flame perfect for food preparation. Firetainment units run using a 20 pound propane tank, or can be connected to a gas line from your home, just like a barbeque. The included fire glass not only beautifies the fire pan, but reflects heat & light, maximizing your gas usage. And of course, it’s food safe and won’t give off any toxic fumes, melt or break down in any way. A variety of accessories, including griddles, woks and fondue sets open up all kinds of entertainment options. Cooking mounts hold your cooking surface (or cradle your fondue bowl) steadily at the perfect distance from the fire, and glass wind guards keep the fire steady even on a breezy evening.
Of course, that’s not all there is to it. Function is vital, but how does it make you feel? Fortunately, Firetainment has you covered. These fire tables are stunningly beautiful, with dozens of possible design combinations. You can choose between the shape, size and colour of the beautiful granite table, and pick between a 21” and 24” table height, as well as the colour of your fire glass and the powder-coated base. This is an eye-catching deck feature and a beautiful conversation table whether lit or unlit.
A product that can so elegantly bring together a table surface, a fire feature and a cooking station into a single well-designed unit is a rare find. Firetainment has become Paul’s go-to product to incorporate into his outdoor living space designs. Tune in to “Decked Out” to see these cool features incorporated into his decks!
So you’ve hired a pro to plan and design your perfect deck. But that’s not all there is to your yard! At Paul Lafrance Design, we believe that your deck should harmonize with your yard and welcome you down to ground level. Landscaping is what will make your deck part of your yard, and not just sitting on top of it. So when our landscaper-of-choice Jeff Sarty introduced Paul to Marquis Gardens, he knew it was a match made in Heaven.
Ponds and water features are Marquis Gardens‘ specialty, and is where their services really shine. When a project is just begging for a water element, Paul’s unique deck designs call for equally unique water features. When he takes his ideas to Marquis Gardens, he can trust them to come up with the perfect solution.
We also love that Marquis Gardens doesn’t compromise on the quality of their products. From plants to fountains to pond kits, you can trust that you’re getting a product that you can rely on. If you’re new to pond ownership and maintenance, they’ll also be with you every step of the way to learn what you need to know to keep your new water feature well-maintained and looking great for years to come!
When it comes to supplying landscaping products for our deck & yard projects, Marquis Gardens just can’t be beat. Located just north of Toronto, this Canadian supplier is centrally located, making it a good choice for a variety of projects in and around the Greater Toronto Area.
