The Pergola: Enhance the Quality of Your Outdoor Living Space

During these unprecedented times of Covid-19, staying home more often than not and “cohorting”… some of you may be thinking that it is time to freshen up that outdoor space of yours.

Previously we’ve discussed how an outdoor dining area is a great way to maximize the amount of socializing space in your home. If you’re finding your outdoor experience to be a bit lack lustre, either because it is in need of repairs or it is outdated, it may be time to transform your backyard retreat into a comfortable oasis that will keep your guests physically distanced outdoors in-style.

One of the easiest ways to enhance the quality of your outdoor living experience is to build a pergola.

According to the Landscaping Network, “a pergola is a freestanding structure with an open roof that is supported by columns or posts. A pergola may also be used to cover a walkway or to provide filtered shade for an outdoor living space.”

The nice thing about a pergola is that it adds definition to your backyard and an inviting entertaining or dining space, which can be especially important if your backyard does not / will not include a deck platform.

A pergola can also add privacy through the use of canopies or curtains, create additional space for plants to hang or climb, provide sun and shade protection from the elements and be made in a variety of materials, such as cedar or metal. It is also an affordable structure that can often be purchased as a kit, for those do-it-yourself types.

This epic project includes a multi-level, curved composite deck, a curved outdoor kitchen, a putting green, a pond with waterfalls, and a revolutionary four-season room that boasts a state-of-the-art golf simulator. During this season, people will see the ups and downs of the job, as well as struggles on and off camera for Paul, the crew, and even the homeowners. “Designers and builders don’t normally like to broadcast their mistakes”, says Lafrance. “For me, that’s what people want to see: The nitty-gritty stuff that contractors, professionals, and homeowners go through; the arguments, miscalculations, and delays that often get glossed over in the reality tv world”, he says.
