Paul Lafrance takes his deck building to a whole new “level” in his “ground-breaking” series Decked Out.
Airing on HGTV since 2012, Decked Out is an outdoor construction reality TV show that follows the journey of Paul Lafrance and his crew as they take on innovative deck and backyard makeover projects.
Owing to Paul’s exceptional creativity, the complex nature of the projects are often quite challenging. One can assume this potentially leading to tense and stressful situations. However, Paul insists that no one takes themselves too seriously and that everyone has fun (as a bunch of “goofballs!”).
Paul’s energy, edginess, humour and charisma are on full display, making Decked Out a must-watch for any backyard and deck design lover.
Check out Paul and his crew on location in action!
Did you know that Paul has recently launched a new TV series called Backyard Revolution? You can check it out here.

There are many elements that have to come together to create the perfect custom space, but for a quality finish you have to start with a quality foundation. Paul is a huge fan of using CGC Inc. Backerboard and Underlayment to set the stage for his designs to unfold.
CGC Inc. is a leading marketer, manufacturer and distributor of gypsum wallboard products, interior finishing materials, as well as suspended acoustical ceilings in Canada. Their products are easy to use, versatile, and have superior tile-holding strength, enabling you to unleash your creative side and be confident that your space will continue to impress for years to come.
Paul has used CGC Inc.’s backerboard in bathroom and kitchen renovations and their self-leveling underlayment in basement renovations and has nothing but good things to say about them. The backerboard panels are strong and durable and deliver high-performance water- and mold-resistant protection, and the DUROCK™ self-leveling underlayments offer superior strength and durability when installing tile or when used as a finished flooring. With other great products, like the CGC DUROCK™ Shower System–a fully bonded waterproofing system for tiled showers installations, designed to control moisture independently of the tile covering, while creating a solid base for a long-lasting shower–CGC Inc. is a company that Paul Lafrance Design is happy to recommend and will continue to work with in the future.
It’s what’s underneath that helps ensure your renovation stands the test of time. You may have picked out the perfect tile for a shower, or flooring for your basement, but before you can install it, make sure that you check out all of the great products CGC Inc on their website and find out has to get you started the right way.
Check in next week for another ‘We <3 It!’ Wednesday for more exceptional products and services, or head on over to our recommended page for the best in the business. If you have a product that will blow us away, get in touch and give us the low-down on your company.

Season Finale of Disaster Decks aired this week on HGTV Canada, and we have new gallery photos to share with you! What a ride: We met some quirky homeowners, built some fantastic backyard retreats, and left some newly-minted handymen ready to take care of their decks for years to come.
First up, when Jessica and Jeff moved into their beautiful new home, the only problem was the old unsafe deck that they inherited. A rebuild was required to keep their growing toddler safe, so Paul stepped in to lend a helping hand.
Next, Bryan and Sarah tried to remove their above-ground pool to refresh their yard, but the job was bigger than they thought and was left half-finished. After getting a helping hand, they’re the proud owners of the perfect deck to celebrate their wedding on!
And when Lida and Asad made their cry for help, Paul & the team arrived on the scene to find a decrepit deck that looked older than the century-old schoolhouse it was attached to! Now, the family of five will enjoy their outdoor oasis for years to come.
Finally, retirees Paul and Anne built their original deck thirty years ago, and weren’t up to the task of tearing it down to start fresh. Take a look at the beautiful outdoor oasis they can now look forward to spending their retirement on!
New Deck Builds on Disaster Decks – We’ve got two more photo sets from last night’s new episodes of “Disaster Decks”, which air on Tuesdays at 9pm e/p on HGTV Canada.
Starting at nine, we met Kathleen & Sam, a couple who have special safety concerns for their young son, and a dangerous old deck. Sam has to admit that he’s in over his head with tackling this fix, so Paul & the crew are on the scene!
Then at nine thirty, Carrie & Clint called in help for their ancient and disintegrating eyesore of a deck. Paul is on the scene to put the old deck out of its misery, and guide Clint in creating a new haven for the family to enjoy!
The Blingy Bathroom on Custom Built – Season 1 Episode 13
Chris and Irma have a dated and poorly functioning bathroom that they want to enlarge and re-style in a Parisian flair. Paul blings out their bathroom with Roman-style columns, a chandelier and heated floors, while giving Chris the massive shower he has always wanted and Irma a corner soaker tub. There is even a vintage style phone for Irma so she can talk to her friends while having a bath.
Brand New Project Photos – Last night’s new episodes of “Custom Built”, airing at 10pm ET on HGTV Canada, featured some of our coolest interior projects & custom furniture to date!
Up first, Paul and the crew took a tired and cramped old bathroom, and turned it into a luxurious and roomy Parisian retreat in “The Blingy Bathroom”, featuring Roman columns surrounding a roomy soaker tub and a jumbo separate shower. And in other projects, the team got back in touch with their tropical side to create an outdoor tiki bar!
Next up, you’ve heard of the man cave, but how about “The Lady Cove”? Paul & the crew created a peaceful haven for this homeowner to dance, read, and relax in a space all her own! Meanwhile, a music-lover with a fondness for classic flair tasked the crew with creating a colourful retro 50s diner with personalized style.
Top quality appliances are vital assets that can improve every aspect of your life in the home, saving you vital time and energy, leaving you to relax and enjoy! When it comes to investing in your home with beautifying & modernizing renovations, you’ll also want to choose an appliance that complements and enhances your haven — not something you might want to hide away. For Paul Lafrance Design, that’s where Fisher Paykel comes in, with a huge variety of kitchen appliances to suit any wild & crazy design that Paul comes up with.
When it comes to cooking, every chef has their style and their favourite tools of the trade. Ultra-precise gas-burning cooktops? All set. Prefer versatile radiant heat? No problem! Stylish & speedy induction cooking? Fisher & Paykel has it all covered, with a variety of combinations in ranges, built-in ovens, cooking surfaces, and even microwave ovens! Plus, their high-tech cooling units — from full size stand-up refrigerators to compact drawer units — will keep your food (and favourite wines!) perfectly chilled and ready to go. Each unit comes equipped with highly sophisticated sensors which constantly track usage and temperature, and dynamically adjust fans & cooling to compensate, so their contents remain fresh & tasty. When you’re all done cooking, dining, entertaining, and showing off your awesomely appointed kitchen, the hidden dishwasher that’s concealed inside a drawer will take care of the mess. What a cool innovation! Paul can’t wait to see what Fisher & Paykel comes up with next so he can incorporate it into his latest reno.
Check out some of the slick applications where Paul Lafrance Design has installed top-of-the-line Fisher & Paykel appliances, including the ultra-slick pop-up gas cook surface & a gorgeous gas-powered stainless steel cook top! Decked Out Season Four – The Privacy Deck & The Stainless Mesh Deck
We’d like to invite you to come on by our gallery for a closer look at the final two projects of season 4 of “Decked Out“! On these projects, Paul put some cool new materials to the test to create stunningly unique outdoor spaces.
“The Privacy Deck” features arched polycarbonate coverings that provide shade and shelter but let in lots and lots of light for a bright and welcoming oasis. Plus, cool motorized bug screening on the lower level lets the homeowners choose their level of exposure at the touch of a button!
And living up to its name, “The Stainless Mesh Deck” features lots of gorgeous custom woven steel mesh! Privacy screens, pergolas, and even furniture. How comfortable can steel be? As it turns out: Pretty darn comfortable!

Spring is on the way! Soon it’ll be warm enough to lounge outside on a sunny lazy Sunday…but what about when the summer scorchers come? You don’t need to schedule your relaxation around the weather or intensity of the sun. For us, that’s where AWE East comes in.
Because so few of us can pick up and leave for a stress-free week of vacation, it’s important for your yard to offer as many of the comforts of vacation as possible. That means versatility, so you can modify your space to fit your mood and schedule. Many of us have limited space, so areas that can do double-duty as both a sheltered lounge and a place to sunbathe are incredibly valuable. By day, you can extend the awning over your hot tub to enjoy an early afternoon soak in the shade, and retract it later on to enjoy the evening sky. Talk about versatile!
Paul has used AWE East ShadeFX canopies on a number of projects on “Decked Out” and “Disaster Decks”, creating customizable shelter for a variety of clients to fit their lifestyles. For the more modest budget, we’ve used manually retractable awnings which are quick and simple to move. For a flashier solution, we’ve also used motorized canopies for a style that just can’t be beat. They are customizable and made-to-order, for a space of any size or shape. Paul has even been able to incorporate a slick, arched awning for an unbeatable dramatic flair.
Like many of our favourite companies, AWE East is proudly Canadian just like us, and they really “get it” when it comes to knowing the kind of weather resistance Canadians need from their outdoor products. Check out some of the ways Paul has incorporated retractable awnings into projects from “Decked Out”! See you next week for another spotlight! Contact Paul today!
